Trading card game Splinterlands is the latest blockchain-powered game to increase the play-to-earn entry level to start earning DEC Tokens. Players in Novice and Bronze III will no longer earn DEC when winning a game. This move is intended to motivate players to power-up one account instead of botting with multiple accounts.
Game mechanics can sometimes be abused by bots, which is why farming rewards needs to be discouraged in certain cases, explaining the earning threshold. Axie Infinity did the same thing in October when Sky Mavis made the decision to block lower level accounts from learning SLP tokens. All Axie Infinity accounts with 800 MMR or lower no longer receive Smooth Love Potions from adventure mode, arena or daily quests.
These changes mean that you need to get enough power and a high enough rating before you can start making money. Acquiring floor priced NFTs also make it harder to compete for newcomers with smaller budgets, which is where Defiance comes in.
Sure, you could simply win roughly 15-20 games to reach the desired level. From that point on, the more you climb the competitive ladders, the better the rewards become. But that also typically means investing to improve your assets, so it could take time before you start actually earning anything.
Splinterlands is a play-to-earn trading card game that started on the Steem blockchain as Steemmonsters. The project evolved to a desktop and mobile game mainly using the Hive blockchain. Cards and tokens can also be traded on the Ethereum blockchain and on Wax.
Axie is a tactical battle game that uses its own native Ronin sidechain. In the game players need to use 3 Axie NFTs to battle opponents and earn Smooth Love Potions (SLP). Players need to use SLP to breed new Axies. In addition, parent Axies can only breed children a limited number of times. SLP has a demand, while the floor price for an Axie NFT is right now more than $200 (the average being closer to $420). In short, you need to spend about $1,000 to play and earn SLP tokens.
The organization and economics behind play to earn games is professionalizing rapidly. Third party organizations like Defiance are building tools and communities to really turn people into gamers earning income by playing blockchain-based games. Defiance offers sponsorships to players who can’t or won’t spend the time or money to get started against a percentage of their earnings. We own the assets, but you control the way you play.
